There are an innumerable amount of flaws in our society that we encounter every day, but some of the deepest problems that exist are the ones that we often fail to see. But, how in the world can you solve a problem you don’t even know exists? Is it possible you are even contributing to this unknown problem? One of the Greenway Symposium’s most important roles in the St. Anne's-Belfield School community and broader Charlottesville-Albemarle community is to educate others on the most important problems we face in today’s age. We believe that education is the first step in a long process towards resolution. By bringing to light some of the most important issues that we fail to recognize, the Greenway Symposium will bring awareness to the problems that have unknowingly been afflicting our local communities and society as a whole.
There are things we fail to see in all parts of our life. For example, many overlook the utmost importance of some of the smallest creatures in the ecosystem, bees, in maintaining a healthy environment. Literature, film and music are all filled with hidden meanings which, upon understanding, help us better interpret history and the way we view our world. Systemic injustices to minority groups around the world are often hidden beneath the surface and are overlooked by many members of society. This year, the lives of nearly everybody was changed by something infinitely microscopic, the coronavirus. These many examples are small, or overlooked, yet all have a profound effect on our world.
Greenway Symposium programming this year will focus on topics like these in attempt to unveil the mask covering the most important issues we unknowingly face. Stay tuned for monthly themes that will focus on specific topics and the things we fail to see within them.
